What was conceived in a discussion over coffee stains and scribbles in a notebook has become the journal you see before you now. The original idea lay buried next to sketches and discarded lines of poetry for some months, never forgotten about, but itching to evolve and become something more. Finally, through the miracle of instant messaging - a typo was made, and iddie was born.
One cell became two, two became four, and before we knew it, the simple idea to start a literary journal began taking shape. When that little strip turns blue, most people have the luxury, though some choose to add a little mystery to their lives, of finding out whether it will be a little boy or girl they will be ushering into this world. While we, too, went through a similar period of excitement and anticipation, it was our unique position to be able to determine exactly what we wanted our little bundle of joy to become.
As we began shaping our ideas, the concept of a journal specifically for creative thinkers quickly emerged. iddie is not simply meant to appeal to the creative writers whose works appear in our pages, but to our readers as well. iddie is a place for writing that not only expands and pushes beyond the boundaries of form and shape, but that presents ideas, new and old, in a way we haven’t thought about them before, a place for writing that questions itself as much as it does the fabric of the world around us. Likewise, iddie is a place for readers who want to absorb what they read, letting the writing permeate their hearts, their souls, and their minds where it can be slept on before being further considered and discussed.
In addition to being a place to share great writing with the world, we also want to support our writers, other journals they have appeared in, and the small presses that publish their works. That is why as you move through our digital pages, you will encounter not only poetry and fiction, but links to journals and presses where you can find more work by the creative minds showcased in our pages. We would also like to thank the writers who have trusted us with their work for our first issue. It is our hope that we have created a journal they can be as proud of as we are.
In our first issue, I have chosen to feature a couple of pieces from our editors. It is my hope that this will give you a chance to see what drives us and why we are embarking on this journey together.
So we hope you enjoy what you find in our pages. If so, we hope you will subscribe for free so you can keep up with us as our little bundle of joy continues to grow.
